Person-Centred Approach

In the world of counselling and psychotherapy, a modality refers to the specific approach or method a therapist uses to guide their practice. Therapists are often trained in one or more modalities, each with its unique principles and techniques. Finding a therapist whose modality aligns with your needs and preferences can be crucial to a successful therapeutic journey.

I am trained in the person-centred approach. This approach forms the foundation of my practice and influences how I work with clients to foster growth and healing. Person-centred therapists adhere to the foundational principles outlined by psychologist Carl Rogers, emphasizing three core conditions essential for therapeutic change.

    • Congruence: I bring authenticity to our sessions by being genuine and transparent. Rather than presenting as a distant professional, I engage with you in a real and human way, allowing for a collaborative and meaningful relationship.

    • Unconditional Positive Regard: I provide a non-judgemental space where you are accepted for who you are, with all your complexities. This acceptance enables you to explore your thoughts and feelings without fear of criticism or judgement, fostering self-acceptance.

    • Empathy: I strive to understand your experiences from your perspective, offering empathy and validation. By deeply connecting with your emotions and experiences, I aim to support you in feeling truly heard and understood.

Building on these foundational principles, my work is further informed by process-experiential and emotion-focused therapy; these sub-sets of the person-centred approach. These approaches emphasise the importance of connecting with your emotions and understanding the underlying feelings that shape your experiences and behaviours.

In our sessions, we will explore your emotional landscape, delving into the sensations and reflections associated with various events. Through guided questions and emotion-focused techniques, we’ll work together to unpack your reactions and gain deeper insights into your patterns of behaviour.

This exploration empowers you to make meaningful changes or cultivate acceptance, leading to personal growth and positive outcomes in your life. Whether it's navigating life's challenges or seeking a deeper understanding of yourself, my goal is to support you on your journey towards healing and self-discovery.

I also offer a free twenty-minute intro session which you can book below to see if we would be a good fit.
